Humphries hut was sited on the Matemateaonga walkway halfway between Omaru
hut and Pouri hut. Unfortunately DoC Wanganui is not a fan of these old Forest Service huts and
this one and Otaraheke hut were very hastily removed as The Hon Sandra Lee
(Minister of Conservation at the time) placed a moratorium on hut removals. The site
of the hut is obvious, and has plenty of flat land for tents if you are
not a fan of the three DoC huts. On the Omaru side of the hut is a track that takes you
up to the Mt Humphries trig. The view from this trig is magnificent.
It is a very big day if you walk from Kohi saddle at the start of the Matemateaonga walkway, to this trig, and then back to the car. From Omaru hut it is a good day circuit back to Omaru or it can be a side track on route from Omaru to Pouri.
Whatever, it is a view worth seeing -part is
shown above.

This page, and pages of the other huts removed by DoC about the same time, are being retained as one can dream that one day the neglect of this area will cease.
